20 Death Scenes in Horror Movie History


Everyone should watch a scary movie on Halloween.  A well made horror flick will
build an intriguing story and shock the audience.  They usually contain unforgettable
murder scenes, mystery, suspense, and gore.  I have collected a list of some of the most
infamous death scenes in horror film history.

20. Final Destination 2 (2003)

Evan Lewis Dies

Final Destination 2 is a 2003 supernatural thriller, and sequel to Final Destination.
While on vacation, Kimberly Corman experiences a vision of a mass pile-up on the
highway on which she is traveling.  She blocks the entrance ramp and spares the lives of
many motorists, who soon begin to die under mysterious circumstances.  All of the

19. House of Wax (2005)

Paris Hilton Gets Slaughtered

House of Wax is a 2005 horror film.  The movie tells the story of six teenagers who are
on their way to a football game in Louisiana.  While traveling down a rural highway, the
group encounters a road block and is forced into a detour.  They decide to pull over and
set up camp for the night near the woods.  The next morning they encounter some
strange men and the situation turns deadly.  In this scene Paige Edwards, played by Paris
Hilton is savagely slaughtered.  As part of the promotion for the film, the phrase "See
Paris Hilton Die" was used.

18. It (1990)

George is Murdered

“It” is a 1990 television miniseries based on the Stephen King novel.  It stars Tim Curry
as Pennywise the killer clown.  Pennywise is an alien being that feeds on small children.
He is powered by kid’s fears and nightmares.  In this scene “It” attacks and rips the arm
off a small boy named George.  In 2011, Warner Bros. will be releasing a theatrical
remake of the miniseries. 

17. The Mist (2007)

Mrs. Carmody is Shot

The Mist is a 2007 American horror film based on the novel by Stephen King.  The
movie begins on the morning after a violent thunderstorm.  David Drayton and his wife
witness an unusual mist moving towards their lakeside home.  The residents of the town
take refuge in the local grocery store, but the mist soon takes over the village, bringing
unwanted guests.  In this famous scene Mrs. Carmody is shot dead. 

16. Lady in White (1988)

Melissa Anne Montgomery is Strangled

Lady in White is a 1988 horror film.  The movie is based on the story of The Lady in
White, who is a ghost that endlessly searches for her daughter in Durand-Eastman Park
in Rochester, New York.  The plot revolves around 9-year-old Frankie Scarlatti who
gets locked into the school cloak room by school bullies on Halloween.  While spending
the night in the closet he witnesses the murder of the ghost of Melissa Anne
Montgomery.  Soon, all Frankie can see is the ghost of Melissa.  This scene is truly

15. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Wrong Choice

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a 1989 film directed by Steven Spielberg.  In the
movie, Walter Donovan sends Indiana and his father on a quest to find the Holy Grail.
Donovan works for the Nazis and desires immortality.  His plan is to have the Joneses
lead him to the treasure.  In the thrilling conclusion Donovan makes the wrong decision
and pays the ultimate price.

14. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986)

Opening Bridge Scene

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is a 1986 big-budget horror sequel.  The film stars
Dennis Hopper as Lefty and Bill Johnson as Leatherface.  It is a strong departure from
the first film and has been labeled a black comedy.  I have included the opening scene of
the movie, in which two high school students are attacked by Leatherface.

13. Ravenous (1999)

A Bloody Battle

Ravenous is a 1999 horror film starring Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle and Jeffrey Jones.
The film revolves around cannibalism in 1840s California.  It is similar to the story of
the Donner Party.  In the film an American soldier gains a hunger for human flesh.  This
scene shows a bloody battle between the leading characters.

12. Braindead or Dead Alive (1992)

Graveyard Scene

Braindead, released as Dead Alive in North America, is a zombie horror film directed by
Peter Jackson.  The film follows the story of the Sumatran Rat-Monkey, whose bite will
slowly turn you into a ravenous zombie.  In the climax of the film, hundreds of zombies
attack the main characters, Lionel, Paquita, Rita and Les.  Braindead frequently tops lists
of the goriest movies ever made. 

11. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

Mary’s Death

Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is the sixth installment in the Halloween
series.  The plot revolves around the "Curse of Thorn", which is ultimately revealed to
be the source of Michael Myers' evil.  In this scene Myers disposes of Mary. 

10. The Thing (1982)

The Creature Attacks

The Thing is a 1982 science fiction horror film directed by John Carpenter and starring
Kurt Russell.  The story revolves around an extraterrestrial lifeform that attacks an
Antarctic research team.  The creature has the ability to shapeshift and can assume
human form.  This scene includes a bloody attack. 

9. Sleepaway Camp II – Unhappy Campers (1988)

Outhouse Death Scene

Sleepaway Camp is a horror movie franchise.  In the 1988 sequel Unhappy Campers,
Angela Baker becomes a counselor at Camp Rolling Hills.  She runs a strict boat and
will not tolerate any drugs, alcohol, pranks, or fornicating.  Her punishment is always
murder.  Many infamous death scenes have come from these films.  In this clip Angela
takes care of an unhappy camper. 

8. Scanners (1981)

Head Explosion

Scanners is a 1981 science fiction horror film.  The movie is about a corporation that
attempts to use people with telepathic and telekinetic abilities to control others.  These
individuals are named scanners.  This murder scene is one of the most famous in horror
film history.  The scanner uses his mind-controlling ability to explode another man’s

7. Halloween (1978)

Bob’s Death

Halloween is a 1978 independent horror film set in the fictional suburban town of
Haddonfield, Illinois.  On Halloween night 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers murdered
his fifteen-year-old sister Judith with a large butcher knife.  He was sent to Smith's
Grove Warren County Sanitarium and was placed under the care of child psychiatrist Dr.
Sam Loomis.  After years of treatment Loomis was led to believe that Michael was
nothing less than pure evil.  At age 21 Michael Myers escaped from the hospital and
went on his first of many murder sprees.  In this scene he kills Lynda’s boyfriend Bob. 

6. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Jason Murders Trey

Freddy vs. Jason is a 2003 crossover horror film.  The movie revolves around Freddy
Krueger, who is trapped in Hell, and is enraged that the children of Springwood have
forgotten about him.  Freddy is determined to make the kids remember and fear him, so
he locates Jason Voorhees in Hell.  In disguise of Pamela Voorhees Freddy convinces
Jason to start a murder spree on Elm Street.  Freddy soon has all of his power back.  In
this scene Jason brutally murders Trey. 

5. Pet Sematary (1989)

Gage is Put Down

Pet Sematary is a 1989 horror film based on a Stephen King novel.  The movie begins
when the Creed family moves into a new home in the town of Ludlow, Maine.  The
Creeds befriend a new neighbor, Jud Crandall, who tells them of an evil pet cemetery.
After 5-year-old Gage Creed is killed by a passing semi truck his parents decided to
bury the boy in the pet cemetery.  He returns as a possessed murderer.  In this scene the
reincarnated Cage is killed.  

4. The Blob (1988)

Sink Kill

The Blob is a 1988 American horror film.  It is a remake of the 1958 release.  The movie
begins when a small meteorite falls to earth near the town of Arborville, California.  An
elderly man discovers a bizarre, jelly-like being near the crash site.  The alien substance
soon begins consuming members of the town.  I have included the infamous sink
murder scene.

3. REC (2007)

Girl Zombie Attacks

REC is a 2007 Spanish horror film.  The story follows a television reporter, Ángela
Vidal, and her cameraman, Pablo, who cover the night shift in one of Barcelona's local
fire stations.  They work for the documentary television series While You Sleep.  It is
one of the best zombie pictures ever made.        

2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Pam is Impaled on a Meathook

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a 1974 independent horror film.  The story revolves
around the ambush and murder of a group of friends who are on a road trip in rural
Texas.  The attackers are a family of cannibals.  The film has been banned in many areas
of the world.  In this clip Pam is impaled on a meathook by Leatherface. 

1. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Glen Lantz is Murdered

A Nightmare on Elm Street is a 1984 horror film directed and written by Wes Craven.
The film is set in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio.  The plot revolves around
several teenagers who are being terrorized in their nightmares by the ghost of a serial
child murderer named Fred Krueger.  Fred Krueger exists in dreams, but has the ability
to kill you in the real world.  In this infamous scene Glen is swallowed by his water bed
and slaughtered by Freddy.  Glen is portrayed by Johnny Depp, in his first theatrical
role.  Look out for The Nightmare on Elm Street: 2010.   

Honorable Mention

Burn After Reading (2008)

In this scene Brad Pitt’s character takes a bullet to the head.
